The ferry, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), capsized while traveling from Kariba to Chalala, carrying approximately 180 passengers and goods, which exceeded its capacity. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the recovery of two additional bodies on August 20, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths to 97. Recovery operations are ongoing as authorities continue to search for remaining passengers.

Government Response

In response to the tragedy, the Government of Zimbabwe has declared a State of Disaster, activating support measures for affected families. This includes funeral services, medical assistance, and psychosocial support. The Minister of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the ferry capsized after being struck by strong waves, despite warnings from the Meteorological Services Department.

Search and Recovery Operations

The ZRP has deployed significant resources for the search and recovery efforts, including boats and personnel from the Sub Aqua Unit. The police have urged Lake Kariba users to report any floating bodies or debris that may assist in the ongoing operations. As of August 22, the number of families still searching for their loved ones at the Kariba District Hospital has decreased, with many having received confirmation about the fate of their relatives.

The African Union has expressed solidarity with Zimbabwe, offering condolences to the families affected by the disaster. Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf conveyed his sympathies and support to the bereaved families and survivors during this difficult time. The United Arab Emirates has also extended its condolences to Zimbabwe and the families impacted by the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigations

The government has initiated formal investigations into the incident, examining the structural remains of the vessel and reviewing operational compliance. There are conflicting accounts regarding the exact number of passengers aboard the ferry, with investigations still underway to clarify these details.

As recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on providing support to the families affected by this devastating incident.
